Waonui (Year 4-6)

The Senior Teaching Team at Addington Te Kura Taumatua works with children from Years 4 - 6. We have a dedicated, enthusiastic and very talented teaching staff. Teachers operate a common timetable and programmes of work in each learning space, which cater to the needs of the children. We plan cooperatively in each of the curriculum areas and provide balance, variety and extension. As a team we recognise the importance of building strong relationships with our students and families, working together to support your child’s needs.

Our school values are important to us and are embedded throughout our daily programmes. At Addington Te Kura Taumatua we strive to demonstrate Awesome Achievement, Brilliant Behaviour and being Connected Citizens.

The Waonui Team comes together every third Friday from 9.10 - 9.50 for our senior assembly. At senior assemblies, individual children and classes may showcase work that they have done so we can celebrate achievements together. We also have a variety of classroom certificates and other awards, which are shared during this time. The wider school community are always welcome at these assemblies.

We encourage our senior students to develop their leadership capabilities within the school and take on extra responsibilities. We have a variety of leadership roles available to Year 6 students, which are selected from the senior team. The Whanau Kapene (school leaders) are students who are selected because of their leadership skills and their ability to demonstrate the qualities we value at Addington School. During their year in this role, they will be encouraged and supported while taking on leadership of assemblies and coordinating positive playground activities for the other children in the school. We also have music, cultural, technology, neighbourhood support and sport leader positions.

Our students participate in a range of sporting events and opportunities throughout the year. In Terms Two and Three, children can be involved with Winter Sports that is held at Hagley Park. They compete against other schools in rugby, soccer and netball. Those children who do not attend Winter Sports will be fully involved in sports and PE programmes here at school. The major sporting events that take place throughout the year for Senior Team children include:

  • Interschool Sports Tournaments

  • School and Zones Cross Country

  • School and Zones Athletics

We are also very fortunate to be a part of a localised sports initiative targeting Yr 4 children. During the year these two year groups will get specific coaching in a number of sports for a term.

The Arts plays a huge role within our school and we have a great variety of music lessons that children can enrol for. The classes offered include violin, guitar, ukulele, singing, piano and drums. Children are able to join our A-Tunes choir, which practice together every Friday. The choir has performances throughout the year and are also invited sometimes to perform at our school assemblies. We also have a Poly-Percussion group that meets every week.

At Addington Te Kura Taumatua, we are very proud of our Kapa Haka group - Te Tipuranga. Every Thursday from 11:30-12:45 children who are part of this group are able to meet together in the hall to practice together. We have a huge number of children interested in this from across the school. They are currently learning waiata that have been made for our kura. The children in this group are also invited to Noho Marae (overnight stays) each term.

Education Outside the Classroom is viewed as an important part of the curriculum. We have a programme that ensures that by the time children have left the Senior Team they will have experienced a three to four day camping experience. This camp may take place at venues such as Wainui, Living Springs or Woodend; just to mention a few.

We, in the Senior Teaching Team, feel that we are a caring and supportive group of practitioners who strive to provide many interesting and exciting learning experiences for our children. We look forward to building strong relationships with both children and families that are part of the Waonui block. By working together, we can help to ensure that all children can make progress and achievements in all areas of school life.

We look forward to the time when your child/children can be a part of this.
