- Our Seniors
The Senior Teaching Team at Addington School works with children from Years 4 - 6, currently being taught in the hall. We have a dedicated , enthusiastic and very talented staff, who co operatively plan interesting units of work in all curriculum areas.
The Teaching Team comes together every third Friday from 9.00 - 9.30 for our senior assembly. At senior assemblies, individual children and classes may present work that they have done, classroom certificates and other awards are given out. The playground caught being good raffle is drawn. The playground raffle prizes are brand new ‘Caught Being Good’ Duffy Books. Two or three are awarded every week. This is also the time for ‘Caught Being Active’ awards, acknowledging students who keep themselves busy and involved in sensible activities at break times. Regular Celebration assemblies are held at the conclusion of major studies. The wider school community are always welcome at these assemblies.
The school leaders are selected from the senior team. The Whanau Kapene (school leaders) are students who are selected because of their leadership skills and their ability to demonstrate the qualities we value at Addington School. During their year in this role, they will be encouraged and supported while taking on leadership of assemblies and co-ordinating positive playground activities for the other children in the school.
Ukelele is taught to all students. Tuition in other instruments is also offered to students as part of the school wide music programme.
Thursday afternoon is our sports time. In terms two and three, children can be involved in interschool rugby, soccer and netball. Other sporting opportunities such as Basketball and Touch Rugby are also offered here at school.
Those children who do not travel on Fridays will be fully involved in our skills based sports programme here at school. Children will be taught the skills that will enable them to take a full part in major games. The major sporting events that take place throughout the year for Senior Team children include Interschool Sports Tournaments, School Cross Country in term two and School Athletics in term four. We are also very fortunate to be a part of a localised sports initiative targeting Yr 3 / 4 children. During the year these two year groups will get specific coaching in a number of sports for a term each that will culminate in a sports tournament practising the skills learned.
Education Outside the Classroom is viewed as an important part of the curriculum. We have a graduated programme that ensures that by the time children have left the Senior Team they will have experienced an overnight camp and a three to four day camping experience. (The Year Three children will have an overnight stay at school, the Year Four children have an overnight camp away from school, and the Year Five and Six children go further a field for, either a three day two night or a four day, three night camping experience.) This camp may take place at venues such as Wainui, Living Springs or Woodend; just to mention a few.
We, in the Senior Teaching Team feel that we provide many interesting and exciting learning experiences for the children in our care.
Students take part in an Enrichment Programme and an ESOL Programme is also offered.
We look forward to the time when your child/children can be a part of this.
